The KY Solar Cats' Story

The goal of the Bath County Solar Car Racing Team is to plan, design, engineer, build, and race a roadworthy solar electric car in the Solar Car Challenge in Dallas, TX in July 2021. The Kentucky Solar Cats, as the team is known, were founded in August of 2017 and is offically the first high school solar car racing team in the state of Kentucky to have designed, built, qualified, and competed in the Solar Car Challenge. The Kentucky Solar Cats successfully passed all “scrutineering” checkpoints and qualified to compete in the 2019 race at the famed Texas Motor Speedway. The team finished 4th in the Classic Division and won the Bill Engel Award for building the most beautiful solar car for the 2019 season. The team fully understands the tremendous responsibility of being the first high school team from Kentucky to take on the challenge of designing, building, and racing a solar car for the Solar Car Challenge. It is the hope that this will be an example to many other schools in the state, and surrounding region. To that end, several presentations have been scheduled and accomplished and numerous schools have already been requesting information and technical guidance on participating in upcoming Solar Car Challenge Races. The Bath County High School Solar Car Racing Team is honored to assist any and all teams.

The Solar Cats wish to provide encouragement and guidance for any school that may wish to learn more about participating in the Solar Car Challenge. Additionally, it is our ultimate goal that we might possibly serve as a catalyst that further encourages STEM education and training of high school students in our state and region, while promoting the advancement of renewable energy research, automotive design and development, and development of the soft-skills necessary for successful transition to business and industry and/or post-secondary education, via a challenging and engaging STEM Large-Scale Project-Based Learning (LS-PjBL) initiative like the Solar Car Challenge.

Lastly, the Bath County Solar Car Racing Team is currently designing our newest vehicle to compete in the 2021 Season at the Texas Motor Speedway and for the Solar Car Challenge Road Race from Texas to Colorado in July 2022!
