The KY Solar Cats' Story

The goal of the Bath County Solar Car Racing Team is to plan, design, engineer, build, and race a roadworthy solar car in the national Solar Car Challenge in Dallas, TX in July 2020. The KY Solar Cats, as the team is known, were founded in August of 2017 and is currently the first high school solar car racing team in the state of Kentucky to have designed, built, qualified, and competed in the national Solar Car Challenge. The Bath County High School Solar Cats successfully passed all “scrutineering” checkpoints in half the required time and qualified to compete in the 2019 race at the famed Texas Motor Speedway. The team not only qualified for the race but also finished 4th in the Classic Division and won the Bill Engel Award for the most beautiful car for the 2019 season. The team fully understands the tremendous responsibility of being the first team from Kentucky to take on a challenge of this magnitude. With that in mind, we are always happy to share our story and provide information about how you may join the growing Solar Car Challenge family. Several presentations have been scheduled and accomplished. Numerous schools have already been requesting information and technical guidance on participating in future Solar Car Challenge races. The Bath County High School Solar Car Racing Team is honored to assist any and all teams! Let us know how we may be of assistance to your school, organization, or community!

The KY Solar Cats strive to provide encouragement and guidance for any school that may wish to learn more about participating in the Solar Car Challenge. Additionally, it is our ultimate goal that we might serve as a partial catalyst for introducing many more schools in Kentucky and the surrounding region to the tremendous educational and personal growth development opportunities found within the Solar Car Challenge. Likewise, we seek to promote the advancement of renewable energy research, automotive design and development, and development of the soft-skills necessary for successful transition to business and industry and/or post-secondary education, via a challenging and engaging STEM Large-Scale Project-Based Learning (LS-PjBL) initiative.

Lastly, the Bath County Solar Car Racing Team is currently preparing new members to join the solar car team to enhance and improve the Sun Surfer to perform better in the 2020 Classic Division. Additionally, we will be testing and improving our car to compete in the Solar Car Challenge road race from Texas to Colorado in July 2021!

In order for the BCHS Solar Car Racing Team to accomplish these goals AND to further assist any and all schools from across the state and this region of the US, we need your support!

We hope that you seriously consider partnering with us as we strive to bring one of the nation’s largest STEM initiatives to as many high school students as possible. Thank you in advance for your support.
